Humic Acid for Soil is a soil conditioner designed to improve soil quality and enhance fertilizer efficiency. It addresses issues such as soil compaction, acidification, and salinization while promoting crop root growth. It is not a fertilizer in itself—containing no nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium—but rather functions by improving soil structure and mobilizing nutrients; therefore, it should be used in conjunction with chemical or organic fertilizers.
Functions of Humic Acid for Soil in soil improvement:
1. Improves soil structure: Humic Acid for Soil promotes the formation of soil aggregates, loosening compacted soil to allow for deeper root penetration while enhancing aeration and the soil’s capacity to retain water and nutrients.
2. Regulates soil pH: Humic Acid for Soil acts as a pH buffer, adjusting acidity or alkalinity as needed, making it effective for treating both acidic and saline-alkali soils.
3. Enhances fertilizer efficiency: Humic Acid for Soil reduces nitrogen volatilization and helps mobilize phosphorus and potassium, releasing nutrients previously fixed in the soil so crops can absorb them more easily. For example, if 100 jin (50 catties) of chemical fertilizer is typically used per mu, adding humic acid might reduce the required amount to 80 jin (40 catties).
4. Remediates contaminated soil: In soils contaminated with heavy metals, Humic Acid for Soil reduces heavy metal activity through processes like adsorption and complexation; it also aids in the degradation of organic pollutants.
Methods of using Humic Acid for soil:
1. Fertigation (drip irrigation or flushing): For mineral-source humic acid, the general dosage is 500–1,000 grams per mu per application; for biochemical humic acid, it is 2–5 kg per mu. Apply every 10–15 days. Some guidelines suggest a maximum of 3 kg per mu for flushing, with the dosage halved during the seedling stage.
2. Foliar spraying: Dilution ratios vary widely—ranging from 1:500–800 to 1:3,000–5,000. Always follow the specific instructions on the product label; it is better to use a solution that is too dilute rather than too concentrated. Excessive concentration can scorch leaves or damage root cell membranes, leading to root burn and seedling death.
3. Basal application: It can be mixed thoroughly with organic fertilizer at a ratio of approximately 1:5 and applied as a base fertilizer to reduce localized concentration.
