Nitrocellulose

Nitrocellulose, also known as cellulose nitrate ester, abbreviated as NC, is a product of the esterification reaction of cellulose with nitrate. Nitrocellulose made from cotton fibers is called nitrocellulose.

Nitrocellulose is a white fibrous polymer, resistant to water, dilute acids, weak alkalis, and various oils. Its strength varies depending on the degree of polymerization, but it is always a thermoplastic. It easily discolors in sunlight and is highly flammable. Safety precautions must be taken during production, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, sales, and use.

Classification of Nitrocellulose:

Based on the structure of cellulose, each ring can only introduce a maximum of three nitrate ester groups. The number of nitrate ester groups introduced determines the properties and uses of nitrocellulose.

Its characterization methods typically use nitrogen content and viscosity, representing the degree of polymerization.

Cotton with a nitrogen content of 13% or higher is called strong cotton and can be used to manufacture gunpowder;

Cotton with a nitrogen content of 12.6% is called colloid and is used to manufacture explosives (i.e., colloids formed by dissolving cellulose nitrate in nitroglycerin) and denamacite (see industrial explosives);

Cotton with a nitrogen content of 8% to 12% is called weak cotton and can be used to manufacture motion picture film (see support), celluloid, and nitrocellulose varnish, etc.
